About us

Historical Background

Nanziga Women Development Initiative (NAWODI) is a non-profit, non-political, community-based organization (CBO) established in 2018 by a group of passionate young women and men determined to respond to the growing social and economic inequalities affecting women and youth in Uganda.

The organization was born out of a shared vision among seven founders—four young women and three young men—who had experienced firsthand the challenges of poverty, marginalization, unemployment, and exclusion from mainstream development programs. Coming from diverse professions including teaching, farming, tailoring, hairdressing, small-scale business, and project planning, the founders united their strengths to create a collective voice advocating for the rights, empowerment, and inclusion of women and youth in community development.

The organization operates a dual-chapter model:

  • The Urban and Slum Chapter in Nabulagala, Rubaga Division North, addressing the unique challenges of urban poverty, digital exclusion, youth unemployment, and gender-based violence in low-income communities.
  • The Rural Chapter in Nanziga, Wakiso District, focusing on agricultural development, climate change adaptation, food security, and the empowerment of rural women and girls.

This dual presence enables NAWODI to implement programs that reflect both urban and rural realities, while building a bridge between the two through knowledge sharing, innovation, and inclusive participation.

Core Activities

Vocational and Practical Skilling of Women and Youth

equipping young people with market-ready, practical, and digital skills to enhance their employability and self-reliance.

Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion

NAWODI recognizes that sustainable empowerment requires financial independence. Beyond skilling, the organization focuses on entrepreneurship development, financial literacy, and savings culture to help beneficiaries build lasting economic security.

Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Action

Climate change continues to threaten livelihoods, especially among rural and peri-urban communities. NAWODI’s environmental programs empower women and youth to engage in climate-smart livelihoods, waste management, and renewable energy innovations.

Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Promoting Gender Equality

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive human rights issue in Uganda, affecting over half of married women (UBOS, 2021). NAWODI works to prevent, respond to, and raise awareness about all forms of violence against women and girls while engaging men as allies in gender transformation.

Agriculture, Food Security, and Rural Livelihoods

For communities in Nanziga and Wakiso, agriculture remains the backbone of livelihoods. NAWODI empowers rural women and youth with modern agricultural skills and climate-smart techniques to enhance productivity and food security while safeguarding the environment.

Cross-Cutting Issues

Across all its thematic areas, NAWODI integrates the following cross-cutting themes: • Gender Equality and Inclusion: Ensuring that women, men, and persons with disabilities benefit equally. • Digital Transformation: Leveraging technology to enhance learning, record keeping, and market access.
