Climate change is a pressing threat, disproportionately impacting rural communities in Uganda through reduced agricultural productivity and environmental degradation. At NAWODI, our Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Action programs empower women and youth to lead sustainable solutions, viewing climate action as a development and gender equality priority.
We focus on green skills development, training in eco-friendly manufacturing like reusable sanitary pads, baby diapers, and energy-saving briquettes from agricultural waste. This reduces deforestation while creating over 150 green jobs. In sustainable agriculture, we promote organic vegetable farming, permaculture, and climate-smart techniques to enhance food security and resilience during droughts.
Our renewable energy efforts include waste-to-energy innovations, such as converting biodegradable waste into briquettes—we produce 20 tonnes annually and have diverted 5 tonnes of waste from dumps through recycling. Tree planting campaigns have resulted in over 3,000 trees planted in Nanziga and neighboring villages, alongside “Green Schools Initiatives” in partnership with local authorities. We’ve reached more than 1,000 community members through awareness campaigns, building women’s leadership in climate governance and supporting cooperatives for climate-smart products.
These initiatives integrate cross-cutting themes like gender equality and digital transformation, ensuring inclusive participation. As we expand, we’re excited about future priorities like scaling green jobs to other districts.
